Musicianship Exams

Musicianship Exams provide a planned program of progressively advancing study that can be used by teachers to guide their students from the beginning level to college entrance.

There are two exam categories:
1. Theory/Technique/Repertoire
2. Theory Only

Requirements for each level of Theory are the same in both categories. The Musicianship Exam Syllabus contains details for each level of study and can be purchased from the Chairman for $10.00. Practice tests (Levels 1 – 6) are included.

Theory/Technique/Repertoire Category

(Students in this Category must take theory, technique, and repertoire all the same year.)

Theory: The theory test is given one month before Technique/Repertoire test and must be passed with a score of at least 70. If the student has not passed the theory test, he may proceed to the Technique/Repertoire part of the exam for a grade and adjudication ONLY and will be ineligible for the certificate and trophy. There will be no refund of the prepaid fee. It is expected that a failed theory test will be repeated the following year when students will be permitted to take more than one level in order to catch up.

Technique: Requirements for each level can be found in the Exam Syllabus. In addition, a technical study of the teacher’s choice is required at every level and must be of appropriate difficulty. Technique should be taught with every lesson and made a part of daily practice.

Repertoire: All levels require four selections to be learned, with two memorized. Levels III-X require one selection from each of the four music periods. Suggestions may be found in the Syllabus. Levels I and II should cover materials taught in method books with enough difficulty to lead into Level III. The teacher must make sure that the pieces are a challenge for the individual student, but not so difficult that they are impossible to perfect with a reasonable amount of effort. Music must be brought to the exam. Copies will not be allowed.

Theory Only Category

Students not wishing to enter the Theory/Technique Repertoire Category, may enter Theory Only Category. The Theory test for both categories will be on the same day. A certificate will only be awarded for a passing grade; a failing grade must be repeated the following year. Students may take more than one level at a time. Seniors may be special level exceptions. Students may remain in the Theory Only category or may move into Theory/Technique/Repertoire in any successive year, at the teacher’s discretion, but they cannot enter only the Technique/Repertoire part of the exam.
